Sustainable Urban Development in India: Issues Related to Urban Basic Services

Purpose/Aim: Sustainability is a concept born out of the environmental debate from the last quarter of this country.

Methodology/Approach : The term sustainable was first sued in the Brundtland (ONU, 1987) Report. But it is only in 1992, during the Rio summit, that the term 'Sustainable Devlopment' was made known for the first time to the general public. The Brundtland Commission defined sustainable development as that which "meets the needs of the present without comprising the ability of the future genearation to meet their own needs".

Findings/Conclusion: The publication of this report has been followed by several attaempts at defining sustainable development.

Keywords: It is defined as a "pattern of social and structured economic transformations (i.e. Development) that optimizes the economic and societal benefits available in the present, with out jeopardizing the likely potential for similar benefits in the future".
