Politics of Fuel Subsidy and Its Impact on the Development of Nigeria

Purpose/Aim: This paper investigates the politics of fuel subsidy in Nigeria, with the aim to ascertain whether the removal of fuel subsidy is capable of spurring development in Nigeria. It relied heavily on secondly data. Using the dependency theory, the paper reveals that Nigerians are not happy with the policy of fuel subsidy removal because past leaders have reduced fuel subsidy with the promise of developing Nigeria, but have failed to do so.

Methodology/Approach : The paper identified corruption as the major reason why the past administrations have been unable to use the proceeds from fuel subsidy reduction to enhance the development of the Nigeria political system.

Findings/Conclusion: The paper recommends that for the policy to scale through the government need to win the confidence of the masses by curbing corruption, diversifYing the economy and embarking on infrastructural development.
